WHAT FREE SEVENTH-DAY ADVENTISTS BELIEVE
“Seventh-day Adventists have no written creed except the Bible; but they hold to well defined points of faith, for which they feel prepared to give a reason ‘to every man that asketh'” them. 1 Peter 3:15.” The following brief propositions may be taken as a summary of the principal points of their faith, upon which there is, so far as we know, very general agreement throughout the body.”They believe:
1. That “God the Father” is a personal, spiritual being. 1 Cor. 8:6; Eph 4:4; Dan. 7:9,13; Heb. 1:3; John 4:24; 10:30; 1 Cor. 10:1-4.
2. That Christ existed with the Father from “the days of eternity.” Micah 5:2 (marg.); Matt. 2:5,6; Prov. 8:22-31; John 1:1-14.
3. That “there are three living persons of the heavenly trio;…the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.” Study Gen 1:1-3, 26, 27; Job 26:13; Isa. 48:16, R. V.; 1 John 5:7; Matt. 28:19; 2 Cor. 13:14.
4. That Jesus, the Son of both God and man, is the “Master workman” by whom the Father created all things. Matt. 3:17; 8:20; Prov. 8:30, R. V.; John 1:1-14; Eph. 3:9; Col. 1:16; Heb. 1:2.
5. That Jesus is our only mediator and personal Saviour from sin. 1 Tim. 2:5; Matt. 1:21; Acts 4:12; 5:31.
6. That the Holy Spirit, the reprover and convicter of sin, is Christ’s representative on earth. Isa 48:16, R.V.; John 16:8; 14:15-17, 26
7. That the Holy Scriptures, the infallible rule of faith and practice, are “given by inspiration of God.” 2 Tim. 3:16, 17; 1 John 1:4; 1 Thess.5:21; Is. 8:20.
8. That repentance and conversion are necessary “that your (our) sins
may be blotted out.” Prov. 28:13; John 3:1-8; Acts 3:19.
9. That those who are truly converted and love God will diligently study and give heed to his Word. John 10:27; 8:47; 3:21; 1 John 1:7. See also Eph 5:13; Prov. 6:23; 1 John 5:3; John 14:15, R.V.
10. That man was made in the image of God” physically, mentally, and morally. Gen. 1:26, 27; Eccles. 7:29; Col. 3:10.
11. That he is “mortal and must “seek” for immortality. Job 4:17; Rom. 2:6, 7; 1 Cor. 15:51-53.
12. That he is by nature born in sin, and “must be born again.” Job. 14:4; Ps. 51:5; Rom. 7:14; Acts 3:19; John 3:1-8; Matt. 18:3
13. That “the dead know not anything.” Eccles. 9:5, 10; Ps. 6:5; 115:17; 146:3, 4; Job 14:21; Isa. 38:18, 19; I Thess. 4:13.
14. That the wicked will finally be destroyed root and branch. Mal. 4:1-3; Matt. 3:12; Rom. 6:23; Ps. 37:9, 10, 20, 34.
15. “That there shall be a resurrection of the dead, both of the just and unjust.” Acts 24:15; John 5:28, 29.
16. That the bread and wine in the Lord’s Supper should be unleavened and unfermented. Acts 2:31; 1 Peter 1:18, 19; Matt. 26:26-28.
17. That “ye (we) also ought to wash one another’s feet” before partaking of the bread and wine John 13:1-17; James 4:10.
18. That we ought, for the support of the gospel work, to return to God His own, the tithe. Lev. 27:30-33; Mal 3:8-10; Matt. 23:23; Heb. 7:1-8
19. That “the just shall live by faith”; i.e. justification and righteousness by faith. Rom. 1:17; 3:20-26; 5:1; 2 Cor. 5:21.
20. That we are to be sanctified through obedience to the Word of God. John 17:17; 15:3; 2 Thess. 2:13; 1 Peter 1:2, 22, 23; Rev. 22:14.
21. That immersion is the New Testament mode of Christian baptism, and a fitting memorial of the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus. Matt. 3:13-16; Mark 1:10; Acts 8:38, 39; Rom. 6:1-5; Col. 2:12.
22. That God’s moral law, written with his own finger, will “stand fast forever and ever.” Ex. 20:1-7; 31:18; 32:15, 16; Ps. 111:7, 8; Matt. 5:17-19; Luke 16:17; James 2:8-12.
23. That the seventh day of creation week is the “perpetual” Sabbath of God. Gen. 2:1-3; Ex. 16:4, 5, 22-30; 20:8-11, 31:15-17; Isa. 58:13; 66:22, 23; Matt. 24:20, 35.
24. That the marriage institution, like the Sabbath, had its divine origin in Eden. Gen. 2:18-24; Mark 10:6-9.
25. That the prophetic portions of the scriptures are as “a light that shineth in a dark place,” And should be carefully studied. 2 Peter 1:19; Matt. 24:15; Rev. 1:1-3; 2 Tim. 2:15; Ps. 119:105.
26. That the personal, visible coming of Christ “is near, even at the doors.” Acts 1:9-11; Rev. 1:7; 1 Thess. 4:16; John 14:1-3; Matt. 24:33, R. V.
27. That the perpetuity of the spiritual gifts is set forth in the scriptures. 1 Cor. 12; Eph 4:8, 11-16; 1 Thess. 5:20, 21; Is. 8:20.
28. That the renewed earth will be the final home of the saved. Matt. 5:5; Ps.37:9-11; Isa. 65:17-25; 66:22, 23; 2 Peter 3:10-13.”
